FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact Battalion Chief Britt Matthews (760) 560-7432

On February 23, 2023 at approximately 1:53 PM, the Escondido Police and Fire emergency Communication Center received reports of a building fire at the intersection of E. Grand AV and Bear Valley Parkway. A commercial structure fire response was dispatched to the location. The first arriving Engine Company reported light smoke coming from a first-floor of a two-story apartment. Upon further investigation smoke was found coming from the roof to the rear of the structure. A Working Fire was declared and additional units were requested.

Upon entry into the building fire was located in the wall adjoining two apartments. It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to locate and extinguish the fire that travelled up the wall of the two-story building and into the attic. Although the fire caused significant damage to the wall, Firefighters were able to minimize loss of personal property in the apartments with extensive salvage and overhaul.

Four adults and one child were displaced as a result of the fire. The Red Cross was contacted to assist with lodging for two adults. No civilians or Firefighters were injured during the incident.

Five Engine Companies, two Truck Companies, one Rescue Ambulance and two Battalion Chiefs were needed to mitigate the incident. Assistance was provided by San Marcos Fire Department. The Escondido Police Department assisted with evacuations and traffic control. SDG&E responded to ensure gas and electrical service were disconnected. Escondido Fire Department Investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
