On November 28, 2021, at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a house on fire in the area of the W 9th Avenue and South Escondido Boulevard, and dispatched a structure fire response. The first arriving engine located the correct address of 241 West 10th Avenue and reported a detached residence adjoining the alley with heavy smoke and fire involvement. Due to the potential for the fire to spread and the threat to life and property, a working fire upgrade and second alarm was requested.

Aggressive action by the firefighters contained the fire in approximately 17 minutes. The structure on fire was found to be an accessory dwelling unit, or “Granny Flat,” that was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Although the involved structure was heavily damaged, there was no fire impingement to the main house. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. In all 7 fire engines, 1 truck company, 1 rescue ambulance, 1 Battalion Chief, and one Fire Inspector responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
